Unsolicited Recs | Jan 2

Hi, all!

The busy work season and holiday season made it so I blinked my eyes and two months had gone by since posting last. How does that always seem to happen? Surely you can relate?

We had a really wonderful Thanksgiving and Christmas. We missed the family who couldn’t make it back (ahem, Vancouver bunch) to celebrate, but aside from that, all was great. I hope you all had a merry everything!

On to some things I think you’ll like!

👸 I’m late to the party, but have been watching The Crown on Netflix. I’ve just about finished up with the first two seasons and while I love Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth, I’m excited to get on to Season 3 to watch Olivia Coleman take on the role. I’m loving the show and Aaron can always tell when I’ve been watching, as I speak in a DELIGHTFUL accent for awhile after. Between this nasty cold I brought back from our weekend in Chicago and The Crown, I’ve been drinking so much hot tea.

🧤 Another media recommendation — the podcast You’re Wrong About is doing a series on the O.J. Simpson trial (and so much more). I’ll be very honest — the hosts take some getting used to. Theirs are not polished radio voices, but they really break down the circumstances that led up to and surrounding the horrible murders of Nicole Brown & Ron Goldman.

📚 Read any good books lately? Mom gifted me a couple novels for Christmas, and I’ve finished one. Saints for All Occasions by J. Courtney Sullivan was a really lovely read about a family you can’t help but fall in love with, even when it’s heartbreaking. If you’re looking for books to add to your list for 2020, may I suggest the NPR Book Concierge? It’s their annual, interactive, year-end reading guide. My Goodreads Want To Read shelf is going to be growing by a bunch, I can tell!

💁‍♀️Have you seen the new Little Women adaptation? I haven’t but really desperately want to. And I loved this article, which was written before the movie was released.

🩰 Marie Claire did a profile on ballerina Kathryn Morgan and her journey to diagnosis with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. It was a fascinating (and enraging) read. I highly recommend it.

🏨 I’m sharing this link mostly so I have easy access to find it again. It’s a list of 20 unique/awesome hotel rooms. While I don’t anticipate finding myself climbing a Peruvian mountain anytime soon, it’s still fun to imagine…

💃I thought this view of the new decade was a funny one. And eye-opening!

If you were born in the 1980s like me, a kid today who’s the age you were in 1990 is a full 30-year generation younger than you. They’ll remember Obama’s presidency the way you remember Reagan’s. 9/11 to them is the moon landing for you. The 90s seem as ancient to them as the 60s seem to you. To you, the 70s are just a little before your time—that’s how they think of the 2000s. They see the 70s how you see the 40s. And the hippy 60s seems as old to them as the Great Depression seems to you.

🎉 New Years resolution…of starting/continuing a vice? Loved this post on Slate.

Whew, I knew this was gonna be a long one. I hope you enjoy some of the fun things linked above. And happy 2020!
